Get to know Flores
Flores is a lush, mountainous island in eastern Indonesia, famous for its dramatic volcanoes, turquoise lakes, and untouched beaches. The region is dotted with traditional villages, colorful markets, and welcoming communities. Known for the legendary Komodo dragons and some of the world’s best diving spots, Flores offers a slower pace of life where nature and culture go hand in hand. Volunteering here lets you experience everyday life in the villages, join in local traditions, and contribute to meaningful community projects—all while discovering the wild beauty of Flores.
About the village
Boleng Pulau is a remote island village near Labuan Bajo, Flores, reached by boat in about 1.5 hours. This island remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Life here is simple and rooted in strong community values, with stunning natural beauty all around—from turquoise waters and lush hills to vibrant village life. While Pulau Boleng’s residents face daily challenges such as limited electricity, education, and internet access, visitors and volunteers are warmly welcomed to share skills, connect with local children, and contribute to community-driven projects. It’s an opportunity to experience authentic island life in Flores while making a meaningful impact.
Education Access
Access to quality education remains a major challenge for children and youth in Pulau Boleng and across Flores. Many villages, including Boleng Pulau, have only basic primary schools, with limited resources, outdated materials, and a shortage of qualified teachers. Continuing education beyond elementary level often means traveling long distances or even relocating—something many families cannot afford. As a result, opportunities for young people can feel limited, and many are at risk of leaving school early to help support their families. Despite these obstacles, local communities are deeply invested in their children’s futures and are eager to welcome outside support—whether it’s volunteers helping to teach, share new skills, or simply inspire students to dream bigger. Improving education is seen as the key to creating more opportunities and a brighter future for the next generation on the island.
